Do NOT Make this Mistake with your Kitchen Island

Do NOT Make this Mistake with your Kitchen Island

Do NOT make this MISTAKE when it comes to kitchen island placement!
.
One of the most common mistakes people make when putting in kitchen islands: putting the cabinets too close together.
.
While it may seem like a good idea to maximize your storage space, this can actually hinder the functionality of your kitchen.
When the cabinets are too close together, it can be difficult to open the drawers and cabinets fully, making it hard to access your kitchen tools and appliances. It can also make it challenging to navigate around the island, especially if you have multiple people working in the kitchen at the same time.
.
To avoid this mistake, make sure to leave enough space between your cabinets and the island. A good rule of thumb is to have at least 3 feet of clearance between the island and any surrounding cabinets or walls. You will want at least 4 feet is you have a sitting area. This will allow for comfortable movement and easy access to your kitchen items.
.
So, if you’re planning on putting in a kitchen island, remember to give your cabinets and drawers some breathing room. Your kitchen will thank you for it! #kitchenisland #kitchenremodel #kitchendesign #kitchenmistakes #interiordesign #homedecor #homeimprovement #interiordesign #kitchenstorage #functionality #homeowners #remodelingtips

when we added on a 400sqft kitchen, i was gonna make it 3ft on all sides of the massive island, but instead decided 4ft and 4.5ft on the fridge side. i am so happy i did. that spacing is beautiful and works great. you can walk around the oven when it is fully open and walk around the dishwasher when it is fully open. i am so glad i gave up 2ft of island for more walking space.

And in the kitchen that you’re doing this video on your fridge sticks out too far

  3. @rayanlee742 on February 10, 2025 at 7:04 pm

Nobody wants to make tight space kitchen it just that people usually don’t have enough space. It’s the matter of money, every square feet matters.

TOTALLY AGREE!!!!!!! I made this mistake and had to move the cabinet and break it

  5. @DuffyGabi on February 10, 2025 at 7:05 pm

    Microwave below counter is dreadful.

  6. @cc_snipergirl on February 10, 2025 at 7:06 pm

My aunt and uncle did this. There’s maybe 2? feet between the island and the wall. You kind of have to shimmy through on the outside, and the island is very long and skinny.

  7. @1SCme on February 10, 2025 at 7:09 pm

Of all the kitchens I’ve had, the ideal distance between cabinets has been 5 feet – large enough for people to move round, but not so large your tramping across a large area.

  8. @ricke451 on February 10, 2025 at 7:12 pm

We went 5′ so more than one can work in the kitchen. So glad we did.

My island is on wheels and can be moved whenever needed

NKBA standards are 44" not 36"

  12. @coorlasarchitecture on February 10, 2025 at 7:14 pm

People need to realize, counter depth refrigerators are typically 30” deep, and will always protrude beyond a standard 24” countertop depth.

The design solution is to either purchase an expensive panel ready 24” depth refrigerator, or increase the countertop depth to 30”, which offers a very spacious worktop surface and a custom built-in look for the refrigerator.

To achieve the extra countertop depth you simply set your standard 24” depth cabinets 6” off the wall, then provide a ledger board against the wall to support the countertop.

  13. @amyharris2121 on February 10, 2025 at 7:15 pm

In our first home we stuffed an island in the kitchen. We never regretted the extra countertop space or seats. Not every home has a large space work with what you have, and more importantly do what makes you happy.

Plan for your future self! If you become wheelchair bound, 3 feet between is NOT enough. 4 feet for a lane to get through with out destroying your cabinets. If you want to cook, do dishes, etc, that you have to turn towards the counter, you should have more than 4 feet. Some plans work better with out the island, but can function with a peninsula.

How about jail sentences for "architects" that design stupid kitchen layouts?

Pompous Arrogant Runt, if a door opens full width and you have to stand to the side so be it, alternative is an open space, people with small pricks still poke wizards sleeves. I’ve a 1890 house

  18. @honeybadgerisme on February 10, 2025 at 7:21 pm

ADA guidelines state 42-46" min. for wheelchair or walker access. If you home can accomodate all stages of life, it costs less if or when the needs arise.

  19. @CMCraftsman on February 10, 2025 at 7:22 pm

Code minimum is 3’ Do not use 3’ as a bench mark. 42” is the minimum amount of space you want between cabinets. Code is the worst way you’re allowed to build something by law.

  20. @aeolia80 on February 10, 2025 at 7:24 pm

Sorry, live in France, have a small kitchen, my aisle is only 85cm. If an appliance is fully open, and I can kinda walk around it, good enough for me, lol

  21. @chris-parker on February 10, 2025 at 7:24 pm

I like to use the two people walking past each other rule. If you have to do a side shuffle or dance, it may be too close. If you can pass each other, almost touching shoulders, you are likely good.

Fridge looked like DOG.Side panel was to short for even counter top to die into.Or pick counter depth fridge bump cabinet size up

Dear god i just rwalized there isn’t even a vent above the stovetop, instead theres open planks with stuff on it just waiting to get covered in grease and dust. This kitchen is a mess lmao

    3 ft do work?

  27. @christinepaulino6185 on February 10, 2025 at 7:30 pm

This is true! As a kitchen designer I tell people an island is not for everyone. There is however, a solution. If your space is small, an island on casters or wheels is the answer. An in floor plug allows you to power up the island and casters allow the island to be moved in cases where there is a lot of traffic. It gives more prep space but bare in mind such a thing is narrower and not as long. Seating maybe limited. The 36 to 48 inches is critical for egress. Islands are nice but there are other solutions.

  28. @webmoore4353 on February 10, 2025 at 7:30 pm

Shops be four feet minimum. Create false wall that is deeper for fridge so it recesses back some and is counter depth but normal size

  29. @jamesm568 on February 10, 2025 at 7:32 pm

Meanwhile that refrigerator is poking out like a sore thumb.

  30. @miekebazen747 on February 10, 2025 at 7:33 pm

Yes.. do not put your island in the middle of the kitchen.. it doesn’t look right, and when you are seated, the space shrinks. Make your island a bit narrower if needed.

  31. @Trenchant468 on February 10, 2025 at 7:33 pm

Yah. 5’ wide one wall kitchen and blank wall is former exterior, so there’s that

  32. @vociferonheraldofthewinter2284 on February 10, 2025 at 7:34 pm

My kitchen has the best flow of any kitchen I’ve ever had before, but there’s one little hiccup. The microwave is across from the fridge. We’ve got a really decent 42 inch space between the island and the counter and things still hang up bad during lunch time.

Easy peesy fix. We’re moving the fridge down 28" to make more counter space by the sink and – boom, bob’s yer uncle – the microwave and fridge don’t argue anymore.

The biggest lesson for me is this: In modern kitchens, we must give microwave placement the same kind of attention as we do the sink, range, and fridge. Most of us have a microwave and many use the microwave more often than they use the range. We now have a ‘kitchen square’ and the sooner we all admit it, the sooner we clean up the last of the clunkiness of our kitchen flow.

I hate the stupid box, and it’s taken me 40 years to admit I’m not giving it up. I just wish they’d make some beautiful ones that are big enough to handle a full plate. It’s a box. There’s endless possibilities and no reason it can’t be stylish. I’ve got tissue boxes that have more style.

  33. @TeamW-p7g on February 10, 2025 at 7:35 pm

White electric stove. Black fridge that extends too far. Nice back splash, shelves and green paint color choice but you went cheap on appliances

  34. @williamboyd4916 on February 10, 2025 at 7:35 pm

NKBA, Recommends The width of a work aisle should
be at least 42β€³ (1067 mm) for
one cook and at least 48β€³ (1219
    mm) for multiple cooks.
    Measure between the counter
    frontage, tall cabinets, and/or
    appliances.

This is their generation version of Brittany Renner.

The problem is that before these young men realize all of this to what Oshay was saying in the end, these types already went Kaioken on the tip and got a vice grip.

  38. @billyoung8118 on February 10, 2025 at 7:42 pm

We are almost done with a massive kitchen remodel. Have a vaulted ceiling room (12 ft tall at the peak). An 8 ft partial wall separated the original kitchen from a mostly unused front room. We tore out that partial wall and doubled the size of the kitchen. This allowed us to add in a large, 10.5 ft x 4 ft island. We laid the island cabinets on the ground first, so we could get used to them and move them around as needed. Finally settled on a 4 ft spacing between the island and surrounding wall cabinets. This way 2 people could walk through no problem, and if the stove or dishwasher was open, you can still easily walk past.

  39. @Green__one on February 10, 2025 at 7:44 pm

When we redid our kitchen, we had a whole bunch of contractors who refused to put an island in our kitchen, saying we don’t have enough space. We refused to go with any of those contractors, and went with one willing to do an island. We love our Island. Even the contractor that installed it ended up admitting that it was a really good ad to the kitchen after he was done even though he had originally tried to talk us out of it.

The advice in this video is horrible. Yes, in an ideal world you will have lots of space around all of it. But we don’t always live in an ideal world, and it is far better to have an island with a little bit less space than it is to give up the island for the sake of a couple of inches.

  40. @sunnyD4103 on February 10, 2025 at 7:45 pm

is that a microwave next to the stove and tucked down under the counter? You might make magazine covers, but no one I know wants to constantly bend over to use the microwave.

  43. @mhsidibe1 on February 10, 2025 at 7:49 pm

  45. @johnpauljones9244 on February 10, 2025 at 7:53 pm

Also, you could get trapped behind the island if multiple people are helping in the kitchen.

  47. @raventhc8847 on February 10, 2025 at 7:56 pm

Oh, so 3 feet is enough? I’m thinking about my kitchen layout which I have 3.25 feet and I thought it wouldn’t be enough. Good to know.

  48. @kirkjohnson6638 on February 10, 2025 at 7:56 pm

I’d suggest opening all the cabinet doors and drawers, oven door, and fridge and freezer doors and then tey to navigate around the kitchen. If you have to take a serpentine path down the aisles, there’s not enough space between your cabinets. And in frint oc the oven, fridge, and dishwasher, if you can’t have the doors open and get two people passing by, it’s not wide enough. There are few things more annoying than frequently having to wait for someone to finish getting things into or out of the fridge, oven, fishwasher, or microwave before you can get by.

  49. @crabkilla on February 10, 2025 at 7:57 pm

4 feet minimum and they should have bought a cabinet depth fridge

  50. @joboo4451 on February 10, 2025 at 7:57 pm

If your kitchen is small, skip the island. Jeez
