What if you cannot make cornbread
All I want is to sit at the camp fire with this man, prep him a kick ass meal, shut my mouth, and listen to him tell stories.
Godfather of Cowboy Cooking
Mr Rollins … I hope maybe one day I can be as good as cowboy cook as you Sir! ❤ I love your videos and pay close attention your cooking methods witch I apply to my cast iron cooking ❤
145 Barrows Inlet
Another Great Video. If just 1 tip is learned it’s well worth watchin. Thank You Brother, Again
I have a Serious question
Cast Iron seems like such a huge pain in the butt. I am out on my property and have a Dutch oven with a chain and a tri pod . I was all exited to use it and now I can’t because it needs to be cleaned properly, seasoned etc…
So I had the wife pick me up one of those blue and white speckled tea pots and im off to using my tripod over the fire in a matter of minutes.
I am seriously considering just picking up a Few pots and pans of this type and retiring that Dutch oven back into the shed before I even try it out…?
With all due respect sir, I’m from the Netherlands aka Holland but didn’t recognized a single you showed in your video what you call Dutch! Not a single thing! Moreover: I think I have more American stuff in my country than you ate stamppot boerenkool with sausage! Or Dutch pea soup!
I use a dutch oven indoors with a regular electric oven. For some dishes like roasts I get better results than cooking directly on the oven.
One thing to keep in mind (I’ve noticed some do) is that if you live in the city you DO NOT dump the fats that remain from cooking or cleaning into the drain. Use a strainer, paper towel or whatever to put that in the bin.
Nice presentation. Thanks.
Good recipe
The whole point of using coals with a Dutch oven is to be able to cook anywhere where there is wood. When you start needing more things than a Dutch oven, then just use an actual oven.
As always thank you for your guidance
Thanks for the video, great information! I’m involved in scouting (was one as a kid and now my kids are in as well), and we do a fair bit of dutch oven cooking. We typically use briquettes for the dutch oven because it seems like it’s easier to convert a home oven recipe to the dutch oven with briguettes. There are charts online (including on Lodge’s site) that give a listing of temperatures and the number of briquettes to use top and bottom to get an approximate temperature inside the oven. I do agree though that for grilling or smoking, briquettes are not the way to go. I use lump charcoal or just wood in my smokers (mostly fruit wood, Apple and Cherry, as I still have quite a bit left from some trees I took out). I have also just used straight coals and have found it to be a bit more difficult, but I do not have a trivet. I’ve got some rebar, so I may weld one up and see if that works better for me.
You’re gonna burn stuff, but keep on cookin. Truly sage advice.
Thanks for the video. And thank you for the advice and instructions. Very helpful if you didn’t grow up cooking outdoors.
I learned alot of my cooking skills from my grandmother. She didn’t cook outdoors but she did cook on a gas stove and used pressure cookers and recycled tin cans, etc. My point being that she was resourceful and you learned to pay attention. What does it look like, taste like, sound like, feel like? At every stage of the process. She would save up the large baked bean cans for Thanksgiving and Christmas to bake her fruit bread and brown bread and even extra stuffing. When they were done and had cooled then you would cut the bottom of the can out and push the bread through. You would end up with round slices of the best holiday breads. Great memories. I learned some cooking from my mother, but she has always been afraid of gas stoves and appliances. Electric is okay, but doesn’t cook the same as gas. Just like cooking with coals. Thank you for teaching us this method.
I’ve got myself one that’s an outside model without the feet. Those can be used anyway with one of them trivets.
Can we use the outdoor dutch oven on indoor gas oven top?
Very good channel. Thank you very much.
Thank you sir, I’m going to try my hands on it 😊
A.. your aluminum pans should be thrown out food cooked In aluminum leaches aluminum into the food and over time causes altzheimers. A good substitute for aluminum is stainless steel
I have cooked a chocolate cake on top of a camp stove in a dutch oven. I used an insert and low heat as I didn’t have coals to put on top of the oven. I preheated the dutch oven for quite a while. The cake turned out perfect. I was about 15 years old at the time. That was about 48 years ago. Love cast iron and that is all I use for cooking.
Pearls of wisdom. Thanks for your genuine advice. Love your content man ❤
Just bought 6 enamelled cast iron pans in assorted sized from an estate sale. Being a Total newb, not knowing if I will often Cook outside like this, I will start with these on the Weber, if I like it I will invest in a "real" one with a dutch windmill on it
It doesn’t look funny if I dutch oven my wife using this video as reference
Thank you Mr. Rollins for this video.
I’m building an off-grid cabin in northern Minnesota and a Dutch oven will be necessary for cooking.
What a beautiful and informative video. Thank you so much for making it and sharing with us.
Love all your videos!
I would like to cook our entire Thanksgiving at hunting camp, using dutch ovens/cast iron skillets. Do you have recommendations?
Sir, you’re a font of knowledge. Regarding you horseshoe Dutch oven trivets: Can an indoor Dutch over be "converted" to an outdoor Dutch oven? With a flat lid that fits the diameter of the oven? This would make an "either/or" outfit.
Do you happen to have a cook book or a recipe book? I love your channel so much!!
Thanks for the video kent.
I was pretending I was out on the range back in day until he said “Pyrex” damn, snapped me back to reality.😂
I so enjoy your videos…thank you !
Wow, I’m excited to try your method of cooking. I am a new subscriber today. Thank you, I learned alot.
I’m in North East Scotland and want to use a dutchie this summer while wild camping? Best tips for afterwards clean up? as obviously water and hot cast don’t mix

I should have seen this video before I started using my brand new Dutch oven my husband got me for Christmas,I placed a roast straight on the flame, burnt the whole thing food and pot charred, today spent a couple of hours trying to clean it up ,a lot of elbow grease
Thank you very much, sir. Your videos are very much. All of them are appreciated.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge! I enjoy your videos and learn much!
If you cut out the center of the shovel and replace it with expanded metal you really get all coals and no ash.
Man i love my cast iron i have various skillets and a duth oven my favorite is an 8 inch my mother gave me when i got mot married i use it every day .
The problem is all the conflcting information i want my cast iron equipment to be just rught but theres so many varying opinions it makes it hard lol .. boil water 8n it or not? Use olive oil or avocado oil or lard soap or not wooden spatula or metal the list goes on and on lol.. one good thing is with YouTube there is a lot of cool videos on the subject makes me realize there’s alot of people who are into it like myself
I’m a retired American living on an island in the Philippines. 4 years ago I shipped myself a Dutch oven from the states and love it from homemade breads to baked eggplant Parmesan . My first experience was at Philmont scout ranch in New Mexico at age 14. We made a peach cobbler on the trail, and I was hooked. Great pointers about coal placement, trivets, and lid rotation. I dont have the long handled lid turner and instead use a large pair of channel lock pliers. It ain’t rocket science I like your coal placement idea… I’ve burned my share of biscuits to know low heat underside works best. Thanks
Thank you that was great you are the best there is Cowboy Kent sent copies to my Grandchildren
Thx u
Why do I feel like he’s the hillbilly uncle we all wanted to have? lol
