How to clean your kitchen sponge
If you’re like most people, you use a kitchen sponge every day to clean your dishes. But is the sponge itself clean?
The answer is probably no.

Since they are a breeding ground for all kinds of bacteria, it is very important that you clean your kitchen sponges regularly. This video is an amazing way to do the job. Be sure to clean your sponges after each use.

Why do people use sponges for doing dishes? I guess I’m so used to using the dishwasher for everything… but if I do wash something by hands, I use a dish cloth and dish soap… I use sponges like this for scrubbing the shower…the scotch brite are really nice sponges…they don’t fall apart nearly as often and some I’ve used.
Because food less safe than it used to be, I clean my sponge often, especially after I have prepared chicken. I don’t have a microwave (the easiest way as many have suggested). So, I get the sponge wet, pour on a little less than a capful of bleach, squeeze lightly to distribute, wipe my cutting board with wet/chlorinated sponge, let both sit 10 minutes, then rinse both. No measuring, no bowls, nothing left over to store. Why do people make things so complicated? Next thing we’ll see is an expensive "sponge cleaner" offered in the stores.
How I clean my sponges and make them last long!
I soak them in a mixture of equal parts rubbing alcohol and cold water overnight. In the morning, I take them out, rinse them well, and then spray a generous amount of Lysol on them. Then I squeeze them a few times to work the Lysol in and finally rinse them for a 1-2 minutes under hot running water! This keeps them smelling and looking fresh and clean for 1-1.5 years and I do it weekly! Feel free to share your method of sponge cleaning with me! Also if you try the method I use, I’d love to hear how it goes!😁
put a solution of bleach and water in a spray bottle. Rinse you sponge well to get food particles out then saturate it with the water bleach solution (just do it in your kitchen sink).
Abrasive side 😂😂
I change my sponge every week.
*looks at boiling water and dish soap*
A new sponge is cheaper. Lol.
I am dead guys 😢
WOW, so elegant in it’s simplicity❣ For democracy & humanity’s sake VOTE BLUE💙
or just get a new one …
My rule of thumb is before every use I’ll zap in a microwave on plate with cold water cuz it like fries any bad shit left in there and after I wash it I do what this lady does and I replace them every month
Wtf, just go to the dollar store and buy another one!
You can sanitize a sponge in the dishwasher or in a microwave people ..
The "throw it away and get a new one" mentality shows how lazy this comment section is. Mass consumerism without re using resources at a basic level.
Can I use hydrogen peroxide
Sponges get dirty and the scrubby bit gets scrubbed off within a few days anyway… so you gotta get a new one regardless
if it’s cheap or there is no bleach in your house just throw it away and buy a new one
Cheaper solution: damp the sponge with water, microwave it for one minute. Done…..
or you can just buy a new sponge
I just replace every 2 weeks
So this is would spongbob is do on his off time
LOL!!!!!!!!!!! Why! WHY!!! so much work & Chemicals 🙁 Are you serious !!!!! #1 best way to do it. 🙂 it will kill the smell & all the bacteria. ? why is it better with Boiling water instead of the microwave or Chemicals #1your sponge has to be very wet or it will burn or catch on fire #2 if your sponge is smelling bad & full of germs now your Microwave will be full of smell from the sponge & it will stink your food. I pour boiling water into a caffee cup with the sponge inside
*Putting it in the microwave works as well.* 😄😄
More sanitary solution step 1 throw out sponge step 2 buy new sponge ITS THAT EASY
Oh…
That’s why all the people in BFDI don’t like Spongy.
Can you use hydrogen peroxide instead?
I have picca and sponges are one of them
O
Bacteria on sponges aren’t as dangerous as people think. You can grab them barehanded and wash your dishes with it, then just rinse your hands in water and be done with it. If you don’t want to, you can put gloves on first, then.
Never cleaned a sponge in my life now I’m suppose to do it every time I touch the sponge. Yeah thats gonna happen.
does any kind of bleach work?
Is that what’s in spongebob
Or…just stick the sponge in a water glass full of a bleach/water mixture.
😁…🤔
How long do u leave it in the solution before rinsing it out ?
I got a pack of 5 sponges for one dollar so,I don’t think they are meant to be washed .If it’s too stinky and dirty just toss it and use a new one
How many documented cases are there of people getting ill from microbes cultivated on a sponge and spread about?
I’ve lived a good 20 years without my parents ever having cleaned the sponge in this manner, and i’ve never fallen ill from such microbes featured in this video.
Low concentrations of pathogens could arguably be a good thing- to strengthen the immune system.
Sterilising the sponge in this manner is borderline OCD…
Yes to everyone saying buy a new one. But only change them when they start breaking down, and keep them clean until you do change them.
Pour boiling water and some vinegar in a cup or container with your sponges, it should keep them clean
I wouldn’t want bleach residue on my dishes
Why can’t you just put them in the wash with the rest of your kitchen towels and such???
Or, just throw out the sponge and use a new one.
Oooooor you could just toss it in the microwave
*NEXT*
Throw away the sponge, get a new one.
I just put it in the dishwasher
