Big bucks for a drip coffee maker that has a Plastic coffee filter
Should have included the Behmor Brazen. It has numerous features the others don’t that improve the coffee, and it’s an excellent value.
(Since I wrote that I got a Fellow Aiden brewer, which is actually much better than the Brazen. Easily the best auto brewer available.)
I just smashed my little coffee maker, as I often do with things that piss me off, for constantly overflowing. Makes me happy to know other people would throw theirs out the window.
Would you please do a review on percolators?
My husband and I have owned ours for almost 3 years and can’t imagine life without it! You totally get what you pay for and I live the fact it’s made in the Netherlands and is built to last forever! It’s a simple coffeemaker—no digital or electronic chips here—just a straightforward, beautiful and easy to clean coffeemaker that you will no doubt cherish and LOVE the coffee it makes!! We bought the copper color and it looks beautiful in our kitchen as well!
I’ll also add that if you buy one and are serious about your cup if Joe, get a good burr grinder and grind your own coffee too…nothing beat us freshly ground coffee in your Moccamaster!
Their recommendation is over the budget.
So, why doesn’t anyone address the potential toxicity of hot water and plastic? The "BPA-free" plastic is a product of China. Do you trust those spurious claims? I just don’t want plastic in contact with the hot water in my machine. Can anyone recommend a machine without the toxic plastic? Thank you.
A flaw with the testing is using the same grind for ALL machines. Cone filters take a finer grind and are better for smaller pots (8-10 cups). Flat bottom filters take a slightly coarser grind and are better for making larger pots of coffee. Put the same grind is as flawed as comparing cars and putting regular into all of them, when some may require premium. The true test would be doing it the way the manufacturer recommends and then tastings with caveats like, “ this makes great coffee, BUT uses 10 percent more coffee so factor that into the operating costs.”
Thank you for the reviews. I wonder if the Technivorm Moccamaster would work brewing only 2 cups, or would I need to run a full pot. I currently use a Ninja that brews directly into my Yeti Rambler 16 oz mug. Thanks for your thoughts.
big surprise
Great analyses, I have always wanted to buy a moccamaster!
Did anyone else notice the Chemex on the counter in the back of the kitchen?
Bridget’s introduction is as good as any first rate Hollywood actress’.
Keep your eye open for a sale. Bot Moccamaster from Wm. Sonoma $100 less on sale.
Worst recommendation video ever
This video may be useless to the majority of viewers, as the vast majority will be looking to spend something less than more than $300 for the most expensive (almost)) machine out there, and will not want a machine that is almost the least expensive but does not make enough coffee for more than one person or so. After all that research, it’s a shame that results were not shared and recommendations made for more mid-priced machines with good performance.
Over 300 dollars for a coffee maker is absolutely nuts. It only does one thing.
single serve is best i dont like the coffee sitting and burning
If you really want a pared down design, that is fun to use, simple and easy on the pocket book, consider a pour over. Like Father use to say, "You supply the coffee and the water, Mr. Coffee does the rest". An automatic drip coffee maker is basically just pouring water of ground, that lie in a basket with a filter. Cut out the middle man and get straight to the point with a simple, elegant pour over. If you think running hot water and coffee over plastic is a good idea, go with the Test Kitchen recommendations.
Do you know if the simplygoodcoffee maker with warmer has two separate heating elements?
*Zojirushi: Great machine!!!* It is designed and made to be good.
About 8 years old now, faithfully (and quickly) brewing a beautiful cup of coffee day, after day, after day…..
Simple, elegant, space-saving design, with rock solid performance! (I can understand the advantage of a thermal carafe, but we tend to pour our coffee within ten minutes, if not sooner) Highly recommended, even more so when comparing $75 to other machines at $300+.
SCA is not THE authority for everything. 1L of water to 55g of coffee is just too diluted. It also depends on the kind of coffee used, and the roast level.
I had a moccamaster for 12 years so you do get your money worth out of them
AVOID the Moccamaster KBT. Their carafe shatters and Moccamaster’s warranty does not cover it. Had it for 2 years using it on weekends, shattered yesterday. Customer service’s response was almost insulting.
"The borosilicate glass lining can be easily damaged when it comes into contact with anything abrasive. The carafe is not covered under warranty. We are happy to offer 20% off and free shipping on a replacement. An invoice with a discount applied has been sent. Once completed, you will receive tracking information."
If the carafe so delicate why sell it? The only thing my carafe came in contact with was: hot water, coffee grounds, dish soap and an Ikea soft bristle dish brush. And gall of their customer support believing I would repurchase another carafe if there is no warranty… I have no nice words to reply to that… For a $340 coffee maker, I expected much better.
I invite you to come to my home. I will make you coffe with a small pot and a cotton rag filter like my grandama used to do it. Best coffe. BTW yes they do sell cotton rag filters for coffe.
I’ll stick with my moka pot. 😊
For me, it’s impossible to buy all the originals I want. I can buy as many replicas of kislux as I want. If the craftsmanship is really good, why wouldn’t I want Chanel and Kelly bags in all colors?
There isn’t a good drip coffee maker. Bad coffee overall . The super automatics are the way to go, such as Jura.
My friend just sold me his KBT for…wait for it…$50. My second Technivorm because I was insane one day and sold mine.
I ❤ my Ninja.
What is the brand of the yellow one in the background? I have been looking for a yellow one and can’t find one anywhere.
Don’t have the fellow product aiden, right?
You are doing a great job! Can you help me with something unrelated? I have a SafePal wallet with USDT in it and I have my recovery phrase.(pride)-(pole)-(obtain)-(together)-(second)-(when)-(future)-(mask)-(review)-(nature)-(potato)-(bulb). How do I transfer them to Binance?
Here we tried these 15 coffee makers, take our word for it. You can either buy the most expensive one possible, or this piece of utter garbage that cooks your coffee on a hot plate. We don’t f-ing care.
America’s Test Kitchen comes through for me again! I just woke up this morning thinking that I wanted to get a larger french press. Recalling the times I’ve forgotten to get back to the press to ‘press’ it after four or five minutes, or to then get back to it to pour it out, an auto-drip seems like something I have to admit that I might want.
Get the showered mod for the Moccamaster and you have the perfect machine. The only knock was the narrow shower head and this fixes that.
Need a coffee filter? We are a manufacturer specializing in coffee filters for 15 years, you can contact me if you need!
The Technivorm Moccamaster is the best one currently on the market especially if you need to make more than 1 cup of coffee.
But at the end of the day, drip coffee is drip coffee, and can be made for a lot less money and still get just as good of a cup of coffee if you get the right device. Enter the OXO Pour Over Coffee Maker; while it is advertised as a pour over, and it can be used in that fashion, but it also has a tank with a sprinkler thing in it that you simply pour water into the tank and it works without any other input or power, just like a drip maker, and it cost less than $30! The only drawback to the OXO is that it makes just one cup at a time, but for a single drinker it works great.
Making a pour over coffee is not that time consuming, if you get the right device. The Hario Switch V60 is more hands off than most other pour overs, and a pour over in my opinion makes a better cup of coffee than a drip, but again you have that limitation of just one cup at a time process. With the Hario you simply get the water to boil, while that’s happening you put a filter into the Switch, grind 20 to 25 grams of coffee, I prefer 25 but 20 is the official amount for 8 ounces of water, then pour just enough water to cover the grounds for about 30 seconds to get the grounds to bloom, then pour in the water without a need to slowly pour it in like most pour overs, then stir the coffee for about 30 seconds, let it set for about 4 to 5 minutes like any immersion maker such as a French Press, and then release the lever, the coffee will take about a minute to fully drain into a cup, but there is no need to attend to the coffee during the process. You can also with the Switch do a slow pour into the grounds with the lever open, like a Hario V60 pour over, so again you have two different ways of making coffee with one device like the OXO, and the Hario is about $50.
Odd how the consistent winner for years on most reviews the Bonavita isn’t represented here.
Based on a similar video from Cooks Country years ago. We bought the Moccamaster. I’ve always wondered why I can’t get a good cup of coffee like you can at a restaurant. Now we do. The service is excellent as well. Ours failed around a year after purchasing. They told us where to send it. We got it back fully functional in about one week. Worth every penny.
Thank you so much for doing this!!!! I wish there were more videos like this one!!! Thank you for testing the things that matter like brew temperature and time!!!!
Another good thing to test for might be ‘coffee saturation’ based on the ‘shower heads.’
Bought the mocha master and it didn’t work at first brew. Steam came out the top. It also feels flimsy by the way. We returned it. I know it’s highly regarded so I was disappointed – but didn’t feel comfortable paying that much and it didn’t work. Still searching. I’d like to know which machine came in 2nd place.
One day like to see them join forces with project farm.
Cold I get the $70 machine and buy a better caraffe for less than $300? Probably. lol
Where is the list on coffee makers tested? Did you try the 8 cup Bonavita Connoisseur? Only issue we have with ours is the carafe will loose a little temp over a couple of hours if left to sit, which doesn’t happen in our house. Single button operation that works flawlessly for our morning brew before work.
Our Breville Precision Brewer died after just two years. We got the dreaded "FILL TANK" error every time we tried to make coffee.
A French press is not that hard. We roast our beans, grind it, and brew it with a French press. We also have well water so there’s that.
I used a Moccamaster while staying at a vacation house for several weeks. The coffee was very good but the difference from my $80 Cuisinart home machine was not worth the spend IMHO. I am sticking with my 10 year old Brew Central with a glass carafe. Oh, and it can brew 14 cups when the need arises.
Capresso coffee makers are far superior to all of these. From ST series to all in one grinder/brew machines like the Capresso Coffee Team Pro Plus the reliability and lower maintenance is far superior and lower cost of purchase. Capresso utilizes GoldTone filters (no paper filters) for less waste and no additional costs to operate.
Forget about those, aeropress is the only way 💯
